Article published in the Journal of the Czech Society for Modern Greek Studies

"In the last issue of our magazine we described the European language project Greek as a Vehicle for Promoting Linguistic Diversity and reported on the preparation of the course e-learning.

The pilot began in December 2011 and will end in May 2012. The courses consist of five sections for each level, each on a specific topic. The modules have a unified structure on the four skills of language knowledge. The courses include tests tailored to the specifications of the certification exam in Greek. Participating students come from various countries (including South Africa or Australia, as well as postgraduate and doctoral students of Modern Greek Studies of Masaryk University in Brno) and working groups that have available a consultant teacher. Professor corrects student papers and schedules Skype meetings. So far there is a positive response from the students.

As part of the pilot program, it was implemented an evaluation by the teachers who were given access to a unit, and were asked to evaluate the methodology for developing online content and higher levels of professional profiles. The aim is to ensure the sustainability of the program after the formal completion which will be held in October 2012 in Brussels."

The final conference of the Glossa Project – Greek as a Vehicle for Promoting Linguistic Diversity - was held on October 11 at the Institut Libre Marie Haps (Brussels).

Chaired by Mrs Natassa Balaska from Action Synergy (Athens), the coordinator of the GLOSSA consortium, the conference was attended by more than 120 participants.

After the welcome speech by Mr Damien HUVELLE, Director of the Institut Libre Marie Haps, Mrs Teresa CUARTERO- LAUSIN, Project Officer of the GLOSSA project at the EACEA, gave a presentation about the activities and the funding of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency in the field of languages. Three talks focused then on the results of the project:

- Mr Kostas DIAMANTIS-BALASKAS, Project coordinator (Action Synergy, Athens), detailed the different phases of the project in a very humorous way

- Prof. Armando DE LEÓN SOTELO-BENÍTEZ (Escuela oficial de idiomas, Madrid) highlighted the project results in teaching policies

- Prof. Dimitris FESSAS (Centro ellenico di cultura, Milan) analysed the global impact of the project on language teaching.

Finally Mrs Ifigenia GEORGIADOU, Director of the Hellenic Culture Centre (Athens), led a panel discussion on teaching the Greek language online. Teachers and students of the GLOSSA e-learning course were invited to share their experience. It was particularly interesting to hear the students, four of whom had come from abroad especially for the conference, at the invitation of GLOSSA, speaking about the pleasure and excitement they felt at meeting their tutors in person, after so many months of purely online work and discussion.

The conference closed with cocktails and a buffet meal which gave the participants a chance to taste some Greek delicacies and to watch a group of dancers, Tradidanse, directed by Mrs Maria Douvalis, performing traditional dances from six regions of Greece. The evening ended with a concert given by Miss Asimina Karamperopoulou, who teaches Greek at the Institut Libre Marie Haps; she was accompanied by three musicians.

All the participants expressed their delight with the quality of the conference and of the cultural event.
